Two weeks ago, Tyson Lewis achieved the first part of his dream, hoisting a Class A state trophy. Next month, he could hear his name called in the MLB draft, which would fulfill another lifelong goal.
After Millard West absorbed a gut-wrenching title loss to Lincoln East in 2023, the Journal Star Super-State baseball captain ensured the Wildcats wouldn't suffer the same fate this spring.
Millard West finished the job, defeating Lincoln East on May 17 at Werner Park.
“The only reason I came to Millard West was to get a state title and to finish off on top, I have never been happier in my life,” Lewis said after claiming the title. “This is the best day of my life.”
However, the state championship may soon be the second-best day of his life. Lewis is ranked 46th on MLB Pipeline's draft board, meaning there's a high probability he gets picked, perhaps even in the first round.

With an incredible season, Lewis cemented his legacy at Millard West and as a Nebraska high school star. In his two seasons as a Wildcat, Lewis amassed a dazzling .478 batting average while collecting 120 hits, 45 being extra-base hits, 90 runs, 78 RBIs and 72 stolen bases.
“The Tysons don’t come around too often,” Millard West coach Steve Frey said. “We can’t (replace him). He’s just not a guy you can replace. We are so excited for his future.”
As Lewis’ attention now turns to the future, he will be attending the MLB Draft Combine held at Chase Field in Arizona.Ěý
“If I did get drafted, somehow, that would be like my dream coming true,” Lewis said.
What’s in store for Lewis is nothing short of remarkable. But the journey wasn’t free of adversity.
Lewis fractured his L5 vertebrae in his lower back entering his sophomore campaign. That injury held him out of competitive baseball for both his spring and summer seasons.
On top of the injury, Lewis took a leap of faith transferring from Yutan — one of three schools in the Class B Platte Valley co-op — to Class A Millard West.
“With my dream of playing college ball and playing professionally, I just thought the level of competition from Class B to Class A was kind of the difference. I mean the talent in Class A is insane,” Lewis said. “So, I wanted to go play some competitive baseball for a really good team, a good program with a good history and Millard West was perfect for me.
“But there was a little bit of concern because there was a lot of hype around me and kind of living up to those expectations knowing I hadn’t played in a year, it was a little tough,” Lewis said. “I was 100% confident in myself, but I hadn’t played baseball in over a year, so obviously I was going to be rusty. I just didn’t know how rusty I was going to be.”
Spoiler alert: Lewis wasn’t rusty. After transferring to the Class A powerhouse, the star shortstop lived up to all of that hype — and then some. He produced a resounding .460 batting average and had 58 hits, 37 RBIs, 37 runs and 41 stolen bases.
“The competition was definitely different but once you kind of get your feet wet and kind of relearn the ropes, it’s the same game the boys have been playing, so it didn’t take long to get adjusted,” Lewis said.
While the competition increase didn’t bother Lewis, the culture shock did.
“Here in Yutan, the whole building is seventh through 12th and there’s like 200 kids total. Then, I moved over to Millard West that has ninth through 12th and they have over 3,000 kids so that was insane,” Lewis said. “But there aren’t many people outside of a 10-mile radius that have heard of Yutan, so I knew transferring would benefit my career.”
Lewis hadn’t met a pro scout until the winter of last season. After tearing it up in Class A, he soon had over 30 scouts at games there to watch him play.
“It was only last winter (when I saw a scout),” Lewis said. “They drove out here a few times to the middle of the country. Having those scouts come out here to watch batting practice and drive through 5 miles of cornfields to the middle of nowhere, it was a really cool experience having those guys come out here and see what it’s like every day in rural Yutan, Nebraska.
“So yeah, I’d definitely say I am a diamond in the rough.”
