America鈥檚 Numismatic Story Begins Here!
At the nation鈥檚 founding, 250 years ago, the United States had no o铿僣ial coinage of its own and instead relied heavily on
international money鈥攎ost notably the Spanish silver Real鈥攖o conduct everyday commerce. During the colonial period and
the early years after independence, chronic shortages of British coins and the absence of a national mint meant that Spanish
reales, widely trusted for their consistent silver content and already familiar through global trade, circulated freely across the
colonies and the new republic.
Congress formally acknowledged this reality by permitting foreign coins to remain legal tender, and Spanish denominations
even in铿倁enced early American monetary units, including the dollar鈥檚 decimal structure. This complete reliance lasted from
1776 until the passage of the Coinage Act of 1792 and the establishment of the U.S. Mint, which gradually replaced foreign
coinage with a standardized national currency. Now a recently discovered, limited hoard of half reales from the famed El
Cazador shipwreck brings treasure from America鈥檚 dawn within reach once more!.
Silver Treasure from America鈥檚 Founding
On January 11, 1784, the Spanish ship El Cazador set sail from Veracruz, Mexico, for the port of New Orleans,
with a load of over 10 tons of pure Silver coins. Had the El Cazador made it to New Orleans, the map of today鈥檚
United States would have been radically altered, and the Louisiana Purchase may never have happened! Each
historic, shipwreck Silver coin is dated 1783 or eariler.

the assayer鈥檚 initials, and the denomination (鈥淩鈥 = 陆 real). The crowned shield of Castile & Leon is flanked by the
Pillars of Hercules and the motto PLUS VLTRA (鈥淢ore Beyond鈥).
