Spring here brings with it blooming flowers at Sunken Gardens, long walks around Holmes Lake, and endless bike paths that lead you to the most beautiful prairie sunsets. It鈥檚 a place where you can live a long, healthy, and fulfilling life鈥f you can afford it. Not far from where the tulips are blooming, and where Clinic with a Heart (CWH) calls home, is the largest medically underserved area in Lincoln and Lancaster County. Wealth is Health A large percentage of families in these areas face various socioeconomic factors that limit their ability to receive quality health care. The Community Health Endowment, in partnership with the Lancaster County Health Department, identifies poverty as 鈥渢he most powerful predictor of disease and mortality.鈥 Data from the U.S Census Bureau indicates that 12% of Lancaster County residents live in poverty. The Luxury of Healthy Living At Clinic with a Heart, we help people who feel like there is nowhere else to turn to get their health needs met. In trying to lead a healthy and fulfilling life, their socioeconomic realities often prevent them from thriving and becoming the healthiest version of themselves. Many can鈥檛 afford to refill their medications or attend routine medical appointments. Jaime, a patient turned volunteer, was working full time when he sought care from our Clinic. Despite being employed, insurance was financially out of reach for Jaime. Clinic with a Heart was able to provide care and alleviate his pain at no cost. Eventually, he was able to return to full health and pursued a career in law enforcement with the Lancaster County Sheriff鈥檚 Office. Jaime has since returned to CWH, not as a patient but as a volunteer interpreter. Statistics indicate that from 2016 to 2020, 18.9% of adults in Lancaster County had no personal healthcare provider. Clinic with a Heart鈥檚 sole mission is to serve people who are uninsured and underinsured through a ministry of healthcare. Dedicated volunteers provide free healthcare with hospitality, dignity, and grace to those who need it most. Providing Hope Services are centered around Medical, Dental, Podiatry, Mental Health, Chiropractic, Vision, Diabetes Education, Physical Therapy, Hypertension Clinic, and other healthcare-related services. At Clinic with a Heart, we connect patients with community partners, providers, and resources, serving as a vital first step towards a healthier path forward. The need for accessible healthcare in our city continues to grow, as do rates of obesity, diabetes, and deaths due to heart disease. Neighborly Love Clinic with a Heart began as a humble endeavor to 鈥減rovide free healthcare in our own backyard鈥. Since 2003, we鈥檝e grown from serving 14 people on our first Clinic night to 1,838 Lancaster County residents in 2024. This growth wouldn鈥檛 have been possible without devoted donors and volunteers. Donors are the heartbeat of our free clinic; without their support, the Clinic simply cannot operate. Their contributions are not just donations, they are investments in the health and hope of our community. Sue and Karl Tillinghast are long-time volunteers at Clinic with a Heart. They describe volunteering as a way of 鈥済iving back what we鈥檝e been blessed with鈥. Lincoln is rooted in compassion and is willing to help our neighbors. It鈥檚 why every year we rally together, as a community, for Give to Lincoln Day. This year, we ask you to let your heart lead the way. Please support our mission at Clinic with a Heart with a donation for Give to Lincoln Day, because healthcare shouldn鈥檛 be a luxury; it鈥檚 a basic human need.
